'Ellen' Moves to KGW, 'Dr. Oz' Premieres on KATU

Ellen Degeneres on KGWAs KGW account executive Bob Torheim first posted in our comments, Warner Bros.' syndicated talk show "Ellen" will move from KOIN at 4pm to KGW at 3pm in September. The move will make room for KOIN's new 4pm newscast.

Additionally, KATU has picked up Oprah Winfrey's "Dr. Oz" for its 3pm slot, bumping infomercials and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" "Dr Oz" has also gained clearance on KEZI Eugene, KTVZ and KFXO in Bend, and KOBI Medford.

In Portland, 3pm will host a battle between KATU's "Dr. Oz," KOIN's "Dr. Phil," KGW's "Ellen," KPTV's "The Doctors," KRCW's new "Judge Jeanine Pirro" and KPDX mainstay "COPS."

At 4pm, KATU, KOIN and KPTV will all air one-hour newscasts, while KGW keeps Oprah, KRCW runs sitcoms and KPDX airs "The People's Court."

Things to Note About Syndication...

At 3pm, KRCW will probably air "The Tyra Banks Show," since the CW network will air her show back-to-back between 3pm and 5pm. So, "The Judge Jeannie Pirro" will become a first-run syndicated show. i don't know if that show have any clearance in the Portland market.

Other notes to add: somewhere mentioned that KGW will move "Rachael Ray" at 11AM. What would that mean for "Regis and Kelly"?

Also, KPDX is keeping "Cops" at 3PM and "The People's Court" at 4PM? I wish they change that afternoon schedule a little bit more!!

Does "Who's Wants to be a Millionaire" have a new home in Portland?

Plus, KCRW will add "My Name is Earl" this Fall and "How I Met Your Mother" in Fall 2010.

Pirro's already on NW32

Are you saying she may be bumped off the station entirely? I'll check for more info.

Pirro is on NW32, but...

Her show is on the CW's Daytime Block (which is network related). In September, "The Tyra Banks Show" will replace Pirro's show and sitcom repeats, while Pirro's show will be aired on some Fox O&O, Tribune (KCRW's owner), Meredith (KPTV/KPDX), CBS and other stations around the country. So, I think Pirro will be air in Portland, but I don't know what station.

Thanks

We've got a line in to Tribune (owner of KRCW). The NW32 people seem very hard to get a hold of.

About the Ellen Show Situation...

Did KOIN wanted to drop "Ellen" for news or did KGW beat them to the punch? It seems to me that KOIN lost "Ellen" and could not find a better syndicated show to air at 4PM. So, KOIN is adding news as a last resort. Do you think so?

Syndication is expensive.

KOIN can fill that time slot with a newscast much more cheaply than a syndicated program. If they make it a "pay to play" show like AM Northwest then KOIN can make even more money. This is a cost-cutting move plain and simple.

You're Right, but...

KOIN may have to do something a little different than KATU and KPTV. Maybe a mixture of news and lifestyle during the 4PM hour. Also, I think KOIN will have a better chance if they launch a 7PM newscast than at 4PM because some people come home late and KOIN's airing of "The CBS Evening News" is #1 in its timeslot (despite CBS News declining ratings). The 7PM newscast would be a strong lead-in from "CBS Evening News" and can compete well against with KGW's "Live at 7PM" and KATU's "Jeopardy." Then, move "Entertainment Tonight" at 7:30PM.

Cash and barter

I can't confirm the cash element, though it's completely plausible. But another significant factor is that with syndication, a station gives up half the ad slots to a syndicator, a significant opportunity cost.

Ellen and Oprah?

That's a big move for the Ocho. Figure Ellen will do even better competing against Phil and Oz instead of the Big O.

If KGW is dumping Live with

If KGW is dumping Live with Regis and Kelly, KATU should pick it up and replace Martha with it.

In case you missed it in the other thread

Regis is switching to KATU.
