KOIN to Launch New 4pm Broadcast

KOIN Local 6While management is still being secretive, OMC can confirm that KOIN is preparing to launch a new one-hour program weekdays at 4pm. The show's format is still unknown, but we've learned that 10 people are being hired. Several of those positions have come and gone on KOIN's jobs page, as we've noted earlier. Those positions have included an anchor, reporter, producer, photographer, Ignite director and news video editor. The anchor job is among the listings that remain:

KOIN Local 6, A Division of New Vision Television, is the CBS affiliate in Portland, Oregon has a Dream job opportunity for solo anchor at KOIN TV. Our ideal candidate has 5 years of large market anchor experience. This is not a job for a show pony. Get out from behind that desk a little more! Show us your field anchoring, compelling interviews with newsmakers, live work and command performance; leave out the anchor montage! This job needs a worker, not a reader.

A 4pm program would compete with news programs from KATU and KPTV, both of which premiered in early 2008.

We'll let you know when we have more.

Excuse me for pointing out the obvious . . .

New hirings AND a bankruptcy filing? I wonder how that's going to go over with the bankruptcy judge?

A Few Things to Note...

Although bankruptcy is not a great thing for a station group, I think business at KOIN will be normal. Look at Tribune, they are currently going through bankruptcy and still acquiring 2010 and 2011 syndicated shows for their stations.

Second, it is good to add more local news programming, but I think having 3 different TV stations airing a newscast at 4PM is a little too much. I think in a year, either KATU or KPTV may have give up their 4PM newscast. If I was KOIN, I would either add a newscast at 7PM after their highly-rated CBS Evening News, while means moving "Entertainment Tonight" at 7:30PM and drop "Extra" all together.

One more thing...

Does anyone know what will happen to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show?" Will KOIN move it to 9AM or do another station acquire the show?

Thanks!

I'll try to get info on Ellen

But since they won't confirm anything's happening, I doubt we'll get that information until later.

Yes Ellen will be moving to KGW this September. She will replace Rachael Ray at 3pm. Rachael then moves to 11am.

Ellen Moving to KGW!!

Thank you for the news. Any other Fall programming changes you see other stations making? I believe the new "Dr. Oz Show" will air on KATU, most likely 3PM in the Fall, which means the end of "Millionaire" on KATU!!

News in the comments!

I'm loving all these comments lately! We've got some great, insightful ones about the state of the industry, plus comments like these with news updates. And I was just hoping for minimally civilized!

three newscasts at 4?

KOIN would be wise to veer away from the Fox12 and KATU models, and maybe try some type of hybrid news show, similar to KGW's 7p.m. show. Maybe more features and local guests and fewer stories just grabbed from the satellite and thrown on for no apparent reason.
A perfect show would build on the previous days stories and set up the evening news shows - the evening news shows could then promise more info on the following day's 4 p.m. show.
