Press Clippings: More Typos Signal Merge of Old and New Media

KGW Newport SkycamWe lied, Press Clippings took much longer than an hour to produce. We blame our terrible, awful, slow computer.

  • KMHD host Al Evans tells OMC it will be "a couple of weeks at least" before the station moves into its new studio at OPB.
  • Portland Sucks calls out Matt Davis for his BlogTown post, "Rape Allegations: Another Side Effect of Big Soccer?" The Mercury's Kiala Kazebee comes to Matt's defense in the comments. Also up for Portland Sucks' wrath is KGW's Breedlove exclusive. As always, there's strong language.
  • OMC reader skihoodoo sends in a photo of KGW's other Skycam in Newport at the Embarcadero resort, a followup to a story in our last Press Clippings. Skihoodoo has been doing a lot to contribute to OMC, thank you!
  • A variation on an idea from @newsjunkie60 via @PortORTraffic: When an event like Wimbledon disrupts the TV schedule, why not put regular programming on a digital subchannel?
  • Local blog I'm in your water offers a Portland media roundup, including former Willamette Week columnist Byron Beck calling Cort of KUFO's Cort and Fatboy "Lars Larson."
  • We almost missed this: The Alliance for Community Media is holding its annual conference in Portland, discussing ways to "protect community media at the national and local levels." The event runs July 15 through 18 at the Oregon Convention Center and Doubletree Hotel.

Beyond our region:

  • The climbdown is complete: Washington Post editor Katherine Weymouth has apologized over the paper's pay-for-access scandal.
  • NYU's Jay Rosen notes that CNN's Reliable Sources relegated that controversy to a commentary in the final moments of the show. Howard Kurtz' status as a media critic while under the employ of two major media organizations has long been a source of its own media criticism.
  • And heavy criticism doesn't always lead to apologies: Columnist Connie Schultz is more resolute than ever that her idea to ban linking and summaries of news stories is a good idea. Should Press Clippings be worried?
  • If you somehow missed it over the weekend, Sarah Palin has threatened to sue bloggers and traditional media over their handling of her sudden resignation.
  • Newsroom veterans may be more likely to get promotions to general manager lately.
  • There's a $3 billion gap between declining TV station revenue and online ad income.
  • Layoffs of copy editors mean more complaints about typos at The Washington Post.
  • The Saturday Evening Post is returning to its roots, differentiating itself on the newsstand by offering more creative writing and fiction.
  • The Library of Congress now offers a searchable database of news stories from 1880 to 1922.
  • Web video is evolving beyond the two-minute clip.
  • Instead of non-profits, The News & Observer has an idea to operate newspapers as low-profits. Insert joke here.
  • Most poll respondents said they wouldn't miss their daily newspaper if it went away. I believe there was a poll to the contrary that we posted recently. Once we add tags to our old stories, that sort of thing should be easier to find.

And another big thank you to our new contributor over the weekend! Donations are all that are making this site possible. As you may have seen in our last post, we're working on ways to increase traffic so we can get some ad revenue coming in. But even then, it's unlikely to be enough to keep us afloat. The slow holiday weekend did some serious damage to our average daily visitor count. If you'd like to help us out with any amount, there's a big shiny button on the left.

This is an open thread, what's on your mind?

Comments

I'm thinking of seriously reducing the national roundup.

There are a lot of interesting little stories in there, but Press Clippings takes a ton of time to compile, and we need a life. Would anyone miss those stories if there were only two or three of them?

I'd miss them but...

...I think everyone here would understand.

Well, it does say OREGON Media Central . . . Maybe limit to NW news or items with a direct Oregon connection.

Questionable Sources?

As someone involved in the dust-up mentioned above you can take this how ever you want, but here is what your post has me wondering.

As a blog covering "Oregon Media" I'm wondering about the effect that quoting something like "PDXSucks" as a reputable news source might have on your relatively new blogs reputation.

A blog who's own author regularly peppers discussions on the site with gems like:

"You read a blog entitled “PDX sucks” and wanted logic?"

and

"I know I’m an [?] and pride myself in being one. I giggle like a halfwit anime school girl every time I’m called one..."

or my personal favorite

"So to anyone from butt[?]ing Seattle (where I still have both a home and a business mind you) that wants to email and tell me what’s what or that you’re going to kick my [?] – good luck with that and go [?] yourself. I saw what I saw. If you love your new best friend Jake so much why don’t you go blow him?"

To be truthful - he didn't "call Matt Davis out" - he called Matt Davis names, and then refused to admit it until after he and his readers had called my wife everything from "Jezebel" to "Ugly Duckling Queen of Disparity" for simply pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of it all.

Just a thought - but you might want to consider your sources more carefully in the future.

Sorry to offend

I understand why you would be offended, Dane, and I certainly respect your defending your wife. But while Portland Sucks can be controversial, it is nevertheless an Oregon media outlet engaged in media criticism, which falls into our purview. It wasn't all name-calling, either. Robert Wagner, the host, used logical arguments, such as; if teachers, bloggers and prisoners can be rapists, should we ban schools, blogs and prisons as well? I'm not endorsing the argument, nor the language — as you can see, I've already had to blank out some of what you've quoted. I'm happy to host media criticism of Portland Sucks in return. We try not to pick sides.

And, by the way, we're big personal fans of Kiala. She was rather pleased when we told her earlier that our spell check suggests "Kazebee" should be "jezebel."

Neither Dane nor I agree with

Neither Dane nor I agree with or disagree with Matt Davis' blog post. I said it before and I'll say it again. I had a problem with the hypocritical nature of Robert Wagner's podcast in regards to Matt's blog post and I said so. I also took issue with the way he called Matt names instead of tackling the issue at hand. And the comments subsequently devolved from there.

I am not Matt Davis' champion. I am his friend. I really don't want this issue to be about me anymore. The issue is about soccer or something, if I remember correctly, and that's that.

I do like being called a Jezebel, however. That does make me happy.

Agree to Disagree

oregonmedia - Thank you for the rational reply, and I appreciate your point.

I don't feel what Robert is doing can or should be considered legitimate media criticism - in my opinion he's the online equivalent of an ambulance chaser, or the paparazzi - what he does is parody, the online equivalent of a angry teenagers diary and he's built an entire persona around the exact same antics that he criticized Matt for.

On his blog and in his mind being an a**hole is some sort of weird badge of honor that not only allows him to say whatever nasty (and possibly untrue) things that come to his mind, but also to never accept the responsibility or consequences that those viewpoint may have. Giving him a voice on your blog is an insult to the people with true journalistic integrity whose names appear alongside his. Calling him a "Media Critic" is like comparing "Rush Limbaugh" to "Meet the Press" - and in my eyes it impugns the credibility of your blog.

That's my opinion - you're absolutely welcome to your own.

Thanks for not calling me names.

Hm, it's a fair point of argument.

I don't have any concrete position on this. I've invited Robert here to discuss it as well. But I'm making an effort to include all media on OMC, so blogs, podcasts and the like will get coverage. It's hard to argue that Robert's not a popular blogger and podcaster. But I don't think you're questioning his inclusion here on the grounds that he's online-only.

Rather than an ambulance-chaser or paparazzo, maybe a better analogy would be a radio shock jock? And maybe I wouldn't cover a shock jock criticizing the journalistic merit of an article using personal criticism.

But I still think Portland Sucks (or any other blog) deserves coverage when what they do falls into the realm of media discussion. For example, when I picked up on this bit of fun on Twitter, a KGW reporter retweeted it. Should I not have mentioned it because Portland Sucks is too controversial?

Like I said, my position isn't concrete. I'm open to good arguments.

Ok, I'll bite...

I guess we're discussing the validity of my being able to criticize the media. Well, that's simple enough. Everyone everywhere has that right, in fact you'll find about a dozen of them under the original blog post that started all of this and I think you'll find that mine was one of the kinder comments:

http://blogtown.portlandmercury.com/BlogtownPDX/archives/2009/07/02/rape...

If we're discussing just how valid my opinion is, well, I guess it's as valid as you want to make it. If OMC has decided that all of this is worthy of attention then that's up to OMC, not me. If others feel that this discussion has no place here then that's what the comment system is for.

Truth be told, I get along very, very well with quite a few folks in local media. I've had arguments with a couple of them, sure, but I've never had a husband and wife tag-team come at me full bore accusing me of attacking anybody, that's a new one. The truly bizarre part of this is that in one ear I'm hearing just how insignificant and stupid I am while in the other ear I'm being told just how awful and irresponsible I am. Pick one already and move on. It would seem to me though that all I really did was vocalize the sentiments of myself and nearly everyone that read and commented on the original article. I said what was on my mind, I just chose to say it elsewhere.

Well, it does say suck . . .

I've been to Mr. Wagner's website and I notice that there is no way to get a transcript or written account of his podcast(s).

I would suggest that providing a transcript or written account of previous podcasts on his website would be a step towards legitimacy . . .

Do you have any information

Do you have any information on reasons Robert Wagner's PDX Sucks site has been rendered mute, as well as his twitter? Yesterday morning after the eve. Kiala and Dane commented here, @Kiala tweeted (July 7th) at 8:09 AM, "I shut blogs down. It's what I do. #magical"

Word on the street

It's a hoax. Planned to resume when everyone returns from va-kay. After all, RW's show is but a burlesque.

Well...

There are some big, bold words on the about page.

The P word again?

Parody. Chances are it could well be the over used ingredient these days. A little too much parody spoiling the stew, perhaps? Maybe RW can get back to us Pdx suckers on that.

Not worded correctly

I see where this could be misunderstood. Word on the street was exactly that "word on the STREET". Morning road run with a bunch (small group), and the podcast and aftermath was one topic of discussion from several angles. The idea of it being a publicity teaser was thrown out.
