KGW, Oregonian conduct KUFO post-mortems

Live @ 7 interview
KUFO casualties on KGW

KGW's Joe Donlon last night interviewed Rick Emerson and Cort and Fatboy, three of Friday's KUFO casualties, as well as Peter Ames Carlin, roving culture reporter for The Oregonian.

Emerson said the station seems to be headed in a "more guy, less geek" direction. Carlin leveled criticism against the station's new owner, Alpha Broadcasting, which he says fashions itself as being local, but "they might as well be from Peru," given how they're importing people from across the US.

Carlin also has an interview with Emerson in today's Oregonian. Emerson had a similar experience to Cort and Fatboy's, saying KUFO executives wouldn't return emails and that the station had become "this weird environment where everyone knows, but nobody says. I figured it was time to start packing."

Carlin confirms that Michael Ricker from KISW Seattle will host middays on the new KUFO. He also says there's uncertainty about the future of sister station KUPL's Lee and Alana in the Morning show. OMC has learned that, although Lee Rogers is retiring and Alana Lynn was told her last day is December 4, Lynn has been invited to audition with new potential morning show personalities while considering opportunities elsewhere. Whether she stays or goes, her current contract is still being terminated.

A careful observer might detect a theme of career uncertainty in radio.

Ricker? Seriously?

That guy looks like he might be the world's biggest Velvet Revolver fan. This does not bode well for Portland radio.

Ricker sucks man Seriously?

Just got done listening to the final countdown of the Ricker Show in Seattle and his mother slipped and said he will be only 2 hours drive away. Man from what I heard this is not good, He uses bad jokes, and has gangsters. Serious KUFO?? WTF? Thats all Portland needs are more gangsters.. This guys is sh it he wont last 1 year. Sounds like you have lost another listener, just when I thought KUFO improved by getting rid of Marconi, Dam, would rather have the Macaroni show.

Within 1 year all of Portland will love Ricker.

Ricker has a history of dominating in the ratings....which can't be said for the old KUFO crew hence they were sent packing. Whether you listen to Ricker or not, a whole lot of people will. He's here for a LONG time folks.

= FAIL

and this is why the quality of Portland radio will continue the downhill progression.

About the same time all of Portland will love George Bush

Thank you for subjecting us with alpha broadcasting talking points. KUFO just burned their listenership for good by letting go two of radio's most innovative shows. Ricker or should I call him Jagermeister will have to build an audience from scratch. Good luck with that.

If Ricker is what people want

I'm off to satellite radio.

I listened to some of the

I listened to some of the rickers show, and have been known to listen to the BJ show off and on over the years when I am up north. That being said, Seattle and Portland are not the same. I seriously hope Alpha is not thinking that cloning KISW will work in Portland.

I don't think Ricker will

I don't think Ricker will have to start from scratch in building a fan base, I'm sure some of us from Seattle will fallow his show. one of the things I enjoy about him is, how much love he shows to the blue collar worker. which is a large chunk of use that listen to KISW. In fact the who station curries that same mentality. they make you feel welcome when you attend their events, and they go out of their way to shack your hand. I know their is a curtain obligation to meet and greet the public, but I truly believe there is really genuine respect he has towards his listeners. give him a few weeks and you will like him.

No thanks

The last thing I want to listen to is radio that caters to blue collar mouthbreathers.

RIP KUFO.

Wow, an elitist AND a (now

Wow, an elitist AND a (now former, I'm guessing) KUFO listener?

Guess what, pal: rock radio was never intended for you. It was ALWAYS intended for the blue-collar crowd. That's why the station's ratings sucked: it was too geek for a regular guy-oriented format. I LOVE the R.E.S. , but he did not belong at KUFO, especially in mornings where he was not appealing to a wider base and was too restricted to really be himself. That entire lineup did not belong on a heritage rocker. Period. That station needs a shake up, and it's about to get one.

KUFO is not for downtown, or the Pearl District, or anywhere else the elitist might call home. KUFO is for the cats in Gresham, Salem, Estacada, the Couve, Oregon City, Clackamas, and so on. The vocal minority on the Internet (fronted by Lisa Wood and Tara Dublin, both of whom are unemployed, not surprisingly) wants to complain that their geeky "smart" radio is off the air, but 1) it's unfortunate, and that's life, and 2) will not matter to the TRUE target demographic, a demo that KUFO has largely ignored until tomorrow at 7 a.m.

Seriously, those of you complaining: you don't matter. If you were there for the geek radio, wait until R.E.S. and C&F end up on the AM band; you're probably not in the KUFO demo anyhow. This station will play well with the crowd it's intended for.

If that's not you, get over it. Really.

Tara Dublin and Lisa Wood are

Tara Dublin and Lisa Wood are "unsurprisingly unemployed"? WTF does that mean? They both got laid off because of the economy, not because they weren't good on the air. Get your facts straight. I'd rather have Lisa and Tara on the air, doing a show together, t han hear those jerks on NRK.

And so what you're saying is that a station that is located in Portland should ignore the people of the city and pander to the mouth breathing mullet heads in the 'burbs? Weak.

Dude...

I am both an old school rocker AND possess an IQ over 140, thank you very much. Yet, wow, not an "elitist", weird huh? I enjoyed listening to jocks use words with multiple syllables and crack jokes that you had to maybe think about for 1-2 mins rather than mouth breathing toilet humor. In reality the only "demographic" KUFO plays for is the people that want to listen to ROCK, and lately even that had devolved to "POP METAL" playing the same 10 or so songs that the record labels and advertisers wanted them to play. Good GOD how many times do we need to hear the latest Shinedown song?!?!
All a competing station would need to do is come on the air and they could kill KUFO with little effort besides VARIETY.

I happen to know for a fact the "Ricker" is a greasy coke head douchebag and Kid Chris got fired for playing "funny" racist songs, wow these guys do NOT fit with what PDX IS. At least that's my opinion as someone that was born here and has lived here all my life.

On top of it all, KUFO completely hose their listeners by making us listen to that gawd awful Steven Hawking voice all GD weekend. WOW that was a brilliant move, instead of streaming pure music, they encouraged me to surf the band and fin a couple other stations I will now listen to INSTEAD. Good Game morons!

Where are the rest of the

Where are the rest of the Emerson Show people?

Your rating: None

They're around

I've been in touch with other RES members, but C&F had the most to say the fastest, so they got the big interview treatment. I've been busy today finding out who the new talents are, researching them and preparing an article for 7 am Wednesday, so I haven't had time to interview the RES folks. I'm also a bit stumped on what to ask them that we don't already know. Any ideas?

Your rating: None

Management SUCKS

Hell just ask them how they feel about the method they found out they were fired. Did someone have the decency to actually tell them to their faces and give them a nice severence or did they have to find out when they couldn't get in the building anymore?

Your rating: None

Ask the new guys...

Ask "Ricker" about how he feels about Cocaine abuse! I know he's a big fan of he drug, so maybe he can describe his "recovery" since it seems all the rage to admit drug use "but I am in recovery". PDX does NOT need more TWEEKERS, Pot Heads are fine, we have plenty of our own, but vacuum nosed losers can stay out.

The trouble with Peter Ames

The trouble with Peter Ames Carlin is that he likes what he likes, and assumes by extension that vast numbers of people do the same. He seems to know nothing beyond a pinpoint spotlight. The RES show had a dedicated, boutiquey fan base, passionate and, as indicated by the ratings history, small.

With some coaching and some willingness to be coached the Emerson show could be made to appeal to a broader audience. What another writer referred to as Rick's "Dennis Miller MNF" tendency toward shooting over listeners' heads with senior-English-major vocabularic curlicues must be cured. And a cool-down on the self-referential obsession would help assure a longer tenure next time on a competitive battlefield such as FM morning drive.

Your rating: None

...and it would make him

...and it would make him exactly the same as everyone else. Screw that.

Maybe he's destined to always have a loyal-but-tiny audience, maybe not. Who knows? He's never really had a chance to appeal to that larger audience. He's generally been relegated to an obscure AM station, with two exceptions: his brief syndicated show and KUFO. In both cases, the show was fatally compromised by managers trying to broaden his appeal.

In any case, better to have a small audience and just get by than paint yourself beige to blend in with everything else.

Ricker is THE MAN!

I've been listening to Ricker for quite a while. Well over 3 years. He's one of the slickest DJ's around. He's not the show, the music and the people who call in and listen to him are the show.

Seattle truly loved the guy and I believe P-Town will too...I know I'll be checking my DOG out streaming of KUFO...

Your rating: None

Different question

OK, so I'm a fan of the RES, but can't listen in the morning, so I like his being let go so that someone might pick him up for midday or drivetime so I can listen again. Other than that whole unemployment thing, I love this!

But, something else seems wrong here. The guy moving here from Seattle - wouldn't moving to Portland morning be considered a demotion for him? Am I missing something?

ricker is the man

ricker is the man and you will find out soon enough i will admite that when i first started to listen to ricker i was woundering who this guy was and what the hell he was saying but the best two parts of the show were high noon which was dedicated to the working man and the asortment of his regular callers that called in like lenoard, the cape crusader, the way high window guy, trash haller, monica the ruber chicken lady, the joker, my gangster who clames to have been in guns and roses and started montly crew and much more thats what im gonna miss and his trade mark please reduce reuse and recycle.

Um, PUNCTUATION much?

Wow, if you and your mastery of the english language and grammar ninjitsu is any representation of "The Ricker"'s fan base or the demographic he appeals to... Well, just wow. Not that your paragraph long SENTENCE wasn't eloquent of course. :-\
I *facepalm* at the idea that the previous hosts use of "big words" and large vocabulary is seen as a negative thing. When did expecting people to be able to read and have basic comprehension of the english language become "elitist"?

KUFO Lineup

Ricker is afternoon drive. Carlin is an idiot with a bad scoop. Never let facts get in the way of a good "news" story. Marconi will be on eves. Station sounds great. Take a listen or DON'T...nothing but whiners in Portland. Maybe with the new lineup we can drive out all the wussy libs from this town and make Portland normal. The Wierd thing can go now.

KUFO, etc.

The various anonymouses (anonymice?) who mentioned me in their notes all make good points. But some off-kilter ones, too, so I'll take a moment here to observe that:

1. My knowledge of Portland radio requires at least 2 or 3 badly written stories in order to be fully detailed.

2. I don't think I ever said in public that Mr. Ricker would be KUFO's morning guy. I may have heard that initially but I learned it wasn't true when I was still reporting yesterday's piece.

3. Laser-focus? Only when there's candy in the house.

4. Bad scoop? An intriguingly abstract allegation, but if it's a correction you're after you've got to have specifics. At least, that's how we play it in the part of the world where we sign our names to things.

Thanks for stopping by

I'm in no place to judge others' errors, but I think the Ricker situation is that Proffitt apparently told you he would be on middays, when he's actually on in the afternoon. Also, even though it looks even more like a typo this way, his name is actually Proffitt. (No worries, I had to triple-check it the first time I saw it.)

Cheers, though. I'll shoot you an email later.

Saabs?

Us elitist's drive and wax Saabs? Saabs are for Euro-Trash mouth-breathers... Personally, I drive BMWs, Mercs and occasionally Audi's, thank you.. I do nothing but wax those cars. I used to wax them listening to radio personalities that could string a sentence together (C&F) but now we are stuck with "bro-ski" Ricker. Off to another radio station. I hope to hear C&F back on the air soon and I can once again wax my elitist cars while listening to intelligent radio.
