"Hey podcasters, if you're hearing this, we've been fired."
That's how Cort Webber opened today's episode of the Cort and Fatboy podcast. KUFO (101.1) also canceled The Rick Emerson Show today.
Webber and Bobby "Fatboy" Roberts, afternoon hosts at the station, were candid about how they had spent the past couple of weeks anticipating bad news. Morning drive host Rick Emerson has yet to make an official statement, though he has posted the following to his Facebook and Twitter accounts:
"What's the opposite of "shiny"? You are, as always, the best audience ever. Watch this space for updates. The Rick Emerson Show salutes you."
Noting that their program director, Chris Patyk, had been fired without any statement from the company, Webber and Roberts asked for people to spread word about what had happened. They were quick to say they weren't asking for a campaign to get back on the air, and pointed listeners to @cortwebber and @fatboyroberts on Twitter, Webber and Roberts' Facebook pages, and Roberts' fatboy_roberts
comcast [dot] net (email address). The website cortandfatboy.com, which the hosts own, will later be redirected to something new.
Additionally, each member of the Rick Emerson show has a blog or website: Emerson, Sarah X Dylan, Tim Riley and Greg Nibler. Additional social media links can be found at the bottom of this page.
UPDATE (10/23, 6:31 pm) Kelly Clarke at Willamette Week has a comment from Sue Reynolds, director of marketing and promotions at KUFO. She confirms that Emerson, Dylan, Riley, Nibler, Webber and Roberts are all fired, but that "the station is a rock station and will continue to be a rock station."
UPDATE (10/23, 9:12 pm): In a post to his blog, Emerson writes, "As of Friday, October 23rd, The Rick Emerson Show (v.6.3) is no more." He encourages fans to subscribe to their newsletter (from the bottom of the left column) but not to organize any protests. "There's lots of folks whose jobs have been eliminated, and many, many families whose daily financial struggles are much more difficult than mine," he said.
UPDATE (10/23, 9:44 pm): Tim Riley adds his thoughts under the headline, "Ooops, it happened again!"
UPDATE (10/24, 2:06 pm): Sarah X Dylan and Greg Nibler have posts up as well.
UPDATE (10/26, 5:48pm): Read the first interview with Cort and Fatboy since they were fired, and how the changes at the station are designed to "put hair back on KUFO's chest."
