Update: Ditch replaces Chris Patyk as KUFO PD

Alpha BroadcastingOMC has confirmed that Program Director Chris Patyk is no longer employed at Alpha Broadcasting in Portland. Notable on Patyk's watch was the move of The Rick Emerson Show from KCMD (970) to KUFO (101.1) in March of this year. Since 2007, Patyk programmed KCMD, KUFO, and, until this August, KXJM (107.5).

Emerson has hosted his show in various forms on various Portland stations since 1997, all on AM radio until his most recent move to KUFO. Also featured on the show are producer Sarah X Dylan, Tim Riley with news, and production assistant Greg Nibler, who is also a weekend host with the station.

OMC has not definitively confirmed any further news regarding The Rick Emerson Show or Patyk's replacement as PD.

UPDATE (10/21, 5:04 am): A 26-year radio veteran known professionally as Ditch will replace Patyk as KUFO's program director. He was most recently the afternoon DJ at classic rock KGB San Diego for five years. Before then, he was assistant program director and music director at classic rock KILO Colorado Springs.

What a shame

KUFO never gave the RES a shot to do the show they do. The bizarre mix of Rick's awesome style and that terrible music was a loser right out of the gate. Who would want to listen to that? I hope Rick shows up elsewhere. He does a great radio show, and it should be on the air.

The background of this new

The background of this new "Ditch" guy sounds like we can expect KUFO to get rid of fantastic shows like the Rick Emerson Show and Cort and Fatboy and replaced with people who do fart sound effects, prank calls, dirty jokes, and stupid stunts. I thought Alpha Broadcasting was all about being local and daring to do great things? It sounds like they're planning to do expected, easy, lowest common denominator things.

Weenie and the Butt

I certainly hope the Rick Emerson Show is able to go elsewhere if they go off air. Radio is in desperate need of shows like Rick's. I've been a listener/pod caster since 2001 and have followed them as they try to find a station that has the balls to keep them. RES is a witty smart show that has a great chemistry between Rick, Sarah and Tim. Greg Nibler has also added a great aspect to the show with "Ball Talk". And Tim is the best newsman in town period. They will be sorely missed if they go off air. KUFO has lost me as a listener. And yes, as expected, Weenie and the Butt indeed.

Wouldn't be surprised

The problem with the Rick Emerson show is that it has never gotten good ratings, on any station. He has a fanatically loyal audience but it is much too small and insular for commercial terrestial radio in today's media environment.

Did fairly well on AM

Actually, when he was on the AM, the show had pretty good ratings compared to other AM stations. The problem was a lack of sales support. They needed a dedicated sales team just for the AM but CBS wouldn't do it. It's hard to keep a show going when you don't have people out there getting advertisers.

KUFO

Alpha broadcasting has their own agenda they arrived in PDX with. It comes as no surprise these guys at 101 got fired. It sucks for them big time..a few months ago all was well and things were happy..ownership changes and they lose their job.
The people at KUPL should be shaking in their boots..they are next, the long time staff that has been there will be gone soon and replaced with younger hipper country jox from out of the market..it is sad.

Cort and Fatboy

Throughout the years of listening to the Cort and Fatboy show (and somewhat of the Rick Emerson show) I have grown to really appreciate the radio. Through high school, and through a good portion of college I have enjoyed many laughs; and shared much misery at the state of the world, laws, stupid people, etc, that the show has delivered in it's own comedic way.

Now that is gone, and so am I, and I'm sure so is the rest of Portland. One day you will realise the horrible mistake you just made; but until then enjoy your cesspool of idiotic commercials, hack replacement DJs, and dwindling listener base. Now I officially have no reason to listen to the radio.

Congratulations on officially ruining my day, as well.

RES Gone? Says who?

I keep seeing "RES is off the air," and yet no one anywhere can point to any announcement or article stating that as fact. Not even Rick's page is reflecting this, although it is obvious something is going on.

Boy, radio really is as stupid as it is portrayed to be. Adam Carrola's analogy of "Radio guys are beavers, and beavers only know how to build damns. Whether they are on a roof, or a river, a beaver just builds damns," is really applicable here. Some new guard buys the station, starts doing radio in the same inane, lowest common denominator manner and believes themselves to be fresh and new.

Sorry Alpha. You're just building the same old crappy damn that has been the hallmark of a dying industry that is still wondering why it can't make money doing the same stupid crap it's done forever. You already fired one team (at least officially) that was doing something innovative, funny, and appreciated (Cort and Fat Boy), and now it appears as if you are, at a minimum, messing with another unique piece of Portland (RES). Well done. There's a very real reason why the "Family Guy" piece, "Dingo and the Baby" works as a piece of comedy. The punch line is that it could be played in most markets and thought of as genius by the aforementioned beaver brigade.

Hey, I know. Make the station top 40, and really rake in the bucks. Sad.

Who says:

Check this update. I didn't get an ok to provide OMC's source earlier, but it was a pretty unimpeachable source.
