The "Live @ 7"

This is certainly a "big" hit with the viewers....... NOT !!!!

Online viewers

Live @ 7 is the only show I know of that promotes online viewing, sending out links to the live video feed on Twitter each evening. I wonder how much better it would do if those numbers were added?

Your rating: None

Can't measure that, but...

...what if you could break out the demo a little younger? Probably better.

Even the current showing is pretty respectable for the kind of product it's meant to be - and no slippage from the last tally. Plus good execution, vs. awful on "Keep It Local".

Who wouldn't rather be #17 than #35?

Live @ 7

I watch Live @ 7 every once in a while online because I don't live in Portland. I think it's a good attempt at taking the traditional newscast where it needs to go. And to those who criticize it, it's better than many main shows put on by other stations if you're judging solely on the ratings.

11pm news lead-ins

You have to believe that the CBS network lead-in is reflected in KOIN's rating success at 11pm. Over the weekend I saw promos on KATU about rating success but that's not reflected in these new numbers.

KATU

When they say they are #1 at 4 on their promo.. they are actually correct. More people watch them that KPTV. The numbers above are those money viewers from 25-54 upon which most tv ad sales are based on. So while they have more viewers in total, it's probably also fair to say KPTV has more viewers that advertisers want to reach.

Things I noticed.

KGW is back on top with the demo that determines how much money your stations makes. Not as convincing as in years past but a good book.
KPTV is slipping. Ratings are still strong but has lost momentum in key newscasts (morning, 10PM) When is IDOL coming back?
KATU looks good in HH ratings but has incredibly old viewers. Newsroom throws a party. Sales Dept can't buy Xmas gifts for their kids.
KOIN can celebrate its 11PM but is dismal everywhere else. Wondering how long the 4PM can survive. Getting beat by syndicated programming in some evening shows. There is no better example of strong network programming bailing out a newscast (11PM).
Where are those viewers at 5PM? 6AM?

KATU press release

I did receive this KATU press release from a couple of sources:

KATU ANNOUNCES VICTORIES AND GROWTH IN THE NOVEMBER 2009 RATINGS PERIOD

December 1, 2009 Portland, Oregon: KATU News wins multiple time
periods in key demographics and sees growth in every newscast in
November 2009 ratings.

KATU News Continues to Build Morning News Ratings
KATU News This Morning has become the fastest growing early morning
newscast since its 4:30 a.m. debut in the spring of 2009. KATU News
This Morning has made major double digit increases over May of ’09
while other morning newscasts have seen flat ratings or even double
digit declines.

Victories in Early Evening News
KATU News is the most watched station for local news in the 4pm to
7pm time period. KATU News First at 4:00 p.m. was once again the #1
newscast with viewers and KATU News at 6:30 p.m. was the #1 local
newscast for that time period.

“The successful November ratings are the result of the hard work and
dedication of our entire news department,” said John Tamerlano, KATU
Vice President and General Manager. “I’m pleased and very proud to
see their hard work and professionalism recognized by our local
viewers.”

KATU's calculations

I thought I posted this earlier. It looks like KATU is adding up their 2.5 hours of local news between 4 and 7 pm and comparing it against the 1.5 hours of KGW news in the same period, giving KATU an extra hour of ratings. If you were to compare KATU's average block of local evening news against KGW's average block of the same, KGW still beats KATU in household numbers. But KATU is the #1 local newser at 4-5pm. They also appear to lead at 6:30, but they don't break down their 6 pm ratings into half hours with Nielsen, so my spreadsheet doesn't show that. The quarter-hour numbers indicate they might lead, but those quarter-hour numbers are time-period averages, not program averages, so those can include, for example, KGW's Blazer games at 6 pm.

KATU News is the Northwest’s Most-Watched Early Evening News & November Ratings Show Growth in Every KATU Newscast

December 2, 2009 Portland, Oregon: KATU, a Fisher Broadcasting station, thanks all the local viewers who have helped make KATU the fastest growing news in Portland. Here are the highlights from KATU’s hugely successful November ratings period.

KATU News This Morning with Rhonda Shelby, Natali Marmion and Carl Click is the fastest growing morning newscast. KATU is the only station to see significant ratings and share increases at 4:30 a.m., 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from the October and May ratings periods.

4:30 a.m. = 125% share growth from May
5:00 a.m. = 80% share growth from May
6:00 a.m. = 44% share growth from May

KATU competitors are flat or down in the mornings, even seeing double-digit percentage declines. KATU News is now the most watched station for news from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. No other station even comes close to matching the phenomenal growth of KATU News.

4 p.m. = 67% share growth from May
5 p.m. = 71% share growth from May
World News with Charles Gibson = 71% share growth from May
6 p.m. = 33% share growth from May
6:30 p.m. = 17% share growth from May

KATU News is the #1 station for news at 4 p.m. with more viewers than its competitors combined.

KATU News is the #1 station for local news at 6:30 p.m.

More and more people are choosing KATU News, and the addition of meteorologist Dave Salesky to the outstanding team of Steve Dunn, Deb Knapp, Angelica Thornton and Brian Wood makes KATU the most watched station for early news.

KATU News at 11 p.m. is the only Monday – Friday late newscast to see double-digit percentage growth in ratings and share from the October (+11% share) and May (+11% share) ratings periods. All other stations are flat or suffered double-digit percentage declines from May.

The weekend editions of KATU News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. with Anna Song and weathercaster Joe English are once again #1.

The weekend editions of KATU News This Morning with Susan Harding and Joe Raineri are the only weekend morning newscasts to grow ratings and share from May (+60% share on Saturday, and +50% share on Sunday).

KATU is proud and grateful to see such a positive response from viewers to the bold moves we have made on our climb to the top of the ratings ladder. Weather is so important to our success and Meteorologists Dave Salesky and Rhonda Shelby are the new choice for accurate forecasts to plan your day. They are the Northwest’s most experienced duo of weather experts and more viewers are clearly choosing their forecast from people they know and trust.

Problem Solver Kerry Tomlinson is another strong addition to our “On Your Side” team, bringing years of investigative experience in the Northwest to KATU. In November, KATU became the new home for Kerry’s Restaurant Report Card, exposing how your favorite restaurants scored on health inspections. Restaurant Report Card can be seen on Tuesday and Friday nights on KATU News at 11 p.m.

Thank you for your support in making KATU the Northwest’s fastest growing news!
