Media Circus update: What storm?

Media Circus

The risks of holding a December event were clear from the outset: holiday plans and winter weather. It looks like we may have a storm this weekend, but all the action appears set for tonight and Saturday. Of course, I decided this month to try to get more TV people to come to the Circus, and they're the people most likely to have to stay at work if things get crazy. But after checking in with several people today, it looks like most everyone is still planning to show.

As I said earlier, we should have guests from KATU, KOIN (still friends!), KGW, KPTV, KZME, OPB, KNRK, KINK, KRSK, The Oregonian, Willamette Week, The Portland Mercury and digital media.

And while this event will also be my coming-out party, it's still primarily a fun social hour/mixer. I'll also be asking for ideas for making the next Circus even better, so chat me up. And remember as always: It's casual, not business.

The details again:

UPDATE (12/11, 3:34 pm): PS: If you've got a blog and you're coming to the Circus, post some photos and I'll post a link. Also, be sure to check out OurPDX, where they'll be live-blogging the party Sunday if you can't make it.

Speaking of the

Speaking of the storm..this'll be round one of Zaffino vs. Salesky. Plus Rod Hill arrived on Jefferson just in time. The one station I know about is totally staffed up, and everyone else must be too--it'll be fun watching the A-team working Saturday.

Who will be there from the stations mentioned?

I decided against advertising names

Beyond the first few I listed earlier: Wayne Garcia, Shauna Parsons and Kevin Coari from KPTV; and Joe Donlon and Stephanie Stricklen from KGW. They all ok'd me using their names, but there are more from those stations, as well as KATU and KOIN. I just didn't want to go back and bother everyone again to ask if it would be ok to name them.

The Storm

Is it me or does it seem strange that all of the TV stations keep referring to the Arctic storm but if you look at the weather radar the storm is coming from the South and not the Arctic.

Dislike storm hype

I just dislike how the stations do all the Hype and fear, people believe them. And yet they don't have a clue on what they seem to talk about.

The Weather Rock

This rock is the perfect weather indicator, it
never fails. It is more accurate than your local
weather person. This rock is the living word and
is 100% correct. This is how it works:

a dry rock means fair weather.
a wet rock means it's raining.
a dusty rock means a dust storm.
a swaying rock means it's windy.
a shadow under the rock means it's sunny.
a white rock means it's snowing.
if the rock is jumping up and down, an
earthquake is upon us.
if the bottom of the rock is under water it's a
flood.

most beautiful of all, though the rock is not
attached to its' existence, it doesn't mind which
of the above is happening.

I just don't like being lied to as a viewer.

Feel free to make this a complaint thread

I'm just glad I didn't hyperventilate about all the stations' storm plans last night the way I had planned. When I heard that there was still a chance that nothing could happen, I realized how silly it would look.

KPTV Non Storm

KPTV pulled back in the middle of the night based on forecasts from its meteorologists. Avoided lots of overtime and cranky people.

KOIN out of control with weather blitz Saturday afternoon.

It looks like ice in the Gorge means the entire region needs over the top coverage of one road closure. pathetic. I just wish weather coverage was relevant and not blown out to scare and misinform people. The public deserve more from their airwaves.

Perhaps it was the news

Perhaps it was the news director's call. Maybe she did not want the threat of legal action being held over her head if she didn't blitz everyone. She is so good at legal threats ...

Just sayin'.

It is not just Portland

Anytime it even looks like the weather is going to change there is like the world's biggest freak out. As I read the posts my own desktop weather gadget was doing it's own "warning warning" because it is going to be raining all next week and in the 50's

No matter where you live in Oregon, the weather folks are going to do their best to tell you that it is going to be the worst.
