Michael Savage leaves KXL for KPAM

Michael SavageMichael Savage is making a run for the border, immigrating from KXL (750) to KPAM (860), where he will air from 3 to 7 pm.

Savage objected to being bumped to 7 pm by KXL's new afternoon newscast, says Brian Jennings, KXL's program director.

This week in that slot, Jennings is testing PK, who most recently hosted The Playhouse, hip-hop station Jammin (95.5 KXJM)'s former morning show. PK has previously filled in for KXL's Lars Larson.

Jennings says that Savage officially leaves the station on February 5, but would not say what will air next week. As for what will ultimately replace Savage, he says, "I would like to be local; we'll see."

At KPAM, Savage will partially fill the holes left by Sean Hannity and Mark Levin, who were poached by KXL sister station Freedom 970 (KCMD). Freedom will begin airing those two shows in April.

Hear the rundown at the top of PK's show Monday:

Can you say Rick Emerson

It's time to bring Rick Emerson back to the Portland airwaves.

KXL would benefit from his instant audience and Portland would benefit from... well, Rick Emerson.

Yes!!!! That time slot would

Yes!!!! That time slot would be perfect for him and his audience.

Taft?

What happens to Victoria Taft?

Your rating: None

Victoria Taft

I've put that question to the GM. In the meantime, if I've got any friends at KPAM reading this, please let me know what's up at oregonmediaatgmail [dot] com. Thanks!

Your rating: None

She's probably toast

My guess is KPAM is pulling the plug on Taft, who often jokes about how small her audience is. Her removal would be consistent with other recent cost-cutting moves by Pamplin, who apparently has grown weary of putting money into what has essentially been a vanity media operation. Bob Miller pulls a sufficient morning drive audience to stay on the air, but for the rest of the day, expect pure syndication.

Taft is staying

Rick Belcher, KPAM's GM, isn't saying much, but he did confirm that Taft will remain on KPAM.

Your rating: None

Whatever

I don't regard Rick Belcher as particularly trustworthy in these matters. He's the guy who fired Bill Gallagher and decimated the news staff shortly after they virtually swept the AP news awards -- and then kept running promos crowing about the achievement! Taft might be kept on nights for the remainder of her current contract just as Tom Parker was, but I wouldn't bet on renewal.

Your rating: None

Victoria Taft

Clearly, KPAM management isn't happy with her numbers or they wouldn't be kicking her off p.m. drive for a syndicated host (especially not Savage, whose career is in obvious decline). What Belcher probably meant is that Taft will be allowed to play out her contract, presumably in the 7-10 p.m. slot. If she's smart she'll read the writing on the wall.

KPAM and Oregon State University

Broadcasting OSU Beaver football games must help boost KPAM's ratings as well -- at least I would think.

Rick

That was about as good idea as him on UFO. He is too much part of the 'keep Portland weird' crowd. Would not work on KXL. He needs a home like NRK or to go work for NPR. By the way, not a slam just an opinion.

Your rating: None

OSU should be back on KEX

KPAM has no night signal. I hate having to DX for games.

just left kxl for 860 then

the only reason i listened to kxl was for Savage, they just lost a listener, i mean really how much lars can anyone swallow 2-3 hours is fine, but really 6-8??

Your rating: None

I didnt write this but it is EXACTLY what I was thinking...

YES... how much Lars can one take? I love listening to Lars Larson and I think he does an awesome job of journalism for Oregon that nearly nobody else is doing. However, I miss Savage. We need him back in Oregon! if he is coming to 860 AM, I would like to see an announcement on their home page about it.

Michael Savage

SO glad to hear that Michael Savage will be back on the airwaves. I'm now a new KPAM fan!! So disappointed in KXL for moving him. I've been a fan since about 2000.

And I agree about liking Lars but we're bordering on overkill as of late, seriously. And PK is okay but he's no Michael Savage, COME ON!

Yay for Michael Savage on KPAM from 3-7!! This news has made my day. Time to change the car pre-sets from 750 to 860 for the afternoons!

Savage

Thank you KPAM for putting Savage back where he belongs, in the afternoon! Now I can free up a radio preset by erasing 750. There's nothing else on KXL worth listening to.

Michael Savage

Is it TRUE!!?? Please let it be so.......Michael Savage on KPAM? I am just now seeing this at 11pm. I can't wait until tomorrow to hear Michael again. I was so disgusted with KXL for dropping him. I agree with the other posters. Enough Lars already.
Thank you, thank you KPAM!
I feel like my favorite old uncle is back in town!

Your rating: None

Not on KPAM yet

At least according to their website. Their GM wasn't very forthcoming with details, so I don't know when to expect Savage on 860.

I live in Portland and I have

I live in Portland and I have a long commute. The only thing I listen to on the radio is Victoria Taft and Michael Savage. So if KPAM really does broadcast Savage and keeps Victoria then the only station I will listen to is KPAM. I sent KXL complaints when they bumped Savage. If no Savage/Victoria I might as well just turn the radio off and listen to my ipod or play with my ham radio.

Michael Savage

I'm with you! Listened every day on the way home. Was very upset when they moved him to later slot. Will keep my ear open for him on KPAM. HUGE HUGE MISTAKE KXL!

From now on KPAM will be the

From now on KPAM will be the most popular radio station in Portland metro area... No Michael - no KXL

With that teeny exception

of KEX and Rush Limbaugh.

Savage

Yeah I can't understand why savage was bumped, he's funny and I like his perspective....he is educated, diverse, informative, and down right correct on many issues....no PC talk........ Im moving to kpam.

Savage

I've noticed these posts over the last several days. Who are you people? I can't believe anyone--ANYONE--listens to a dirt bag like Savage. What a low-life creep. He disparages humanity in general, and women in particular. Who gives a rat's ass what he says or which station he's on? An egregious waste of time and airwaves.

Your rating: None

I agree

I'm wondering if any of these pro Savage comments are coming from the same IP address.. Moderator?

Your rating: None

They're unique IPs

Listeners are doing web searches to find out what happened to Savage and are landing here.

Your rating: None

Savage

Then don't listen. Or would you rather shut up the people you don't like with the force of law?

Your rating: None

Savage

I'm glad to hear Savage is still on somewhere, your loss KXL.
Are his views extreme? YES!! But he's his own guy, nobody feeds him an opinion. Also, he's like the rest of us, some days talks politics, some days he's totally ticked off and can't take it any more, some days he's sick of all the political crap and just wants to talk about his dog Teddy, or the meatballs at his favorite Italian place. Don't always agree with him, but he almost always makes me laugh! So long KXL.

The Savage Nation

I also agree, I'm very pleased to know that Savage will be on KPAM! The afternoon drive has been very disappointing. Looking forward to the intellectually stimulating drives once again! KPAM has a new dedicated listener.

Savage Nation

PiratePete here, I am a huge Michael Savage fan and glad to hear that the SAVAGE NATION is back on the air during drivetime in Portland!

Your rating: None

Good to know.

I pretty much turned off my radio and turned on my ipod when savage disappeared from kxl. DUMB move kxl. I listen to the radio 5 days a week from 3pm to at least 12:30am during my swing shift. Most of that time my dial was locked onto 750am. Not any more. Changed my pre sets and bookmarked the kpam stream on my computer. Like someone else said "no savage no kxl."

Your rating: None

Savage

Savage was the best show on radio. I like Taft, but I can't wait for Savage to get back on the air. Anyone who does not like him must enjoy the Democrat and Republican party line business-as-usual garbage. Borders. Language. Culture.

Your rating: None

Still no Savage

I, too, kept my radio dialed to KXL the whole day, now I do not listed to KXL as a matter of principle. If Savage is moving to KPAM, when does he start? He is one of the rare few in the media that speaks the truth, failure to maintain our borders, language and culture is sending our nation spiraling down the sewer pipe of history.

Your rating: None

KPAM isn't saying

They've confirmed that he's coming, but nothing beyond that. Sorry! Some have guessed that it could be as late as April, when Hannity and Levin move to KCMD.

Your rating: None

Good bye Savage...

Count me as among those not missing Savage. I am conservative, but quickly grew weary of his emotional outbursts and meandering diatribes. He makes some good points, but his whining is beyond tolerable. Savage Nation fans--glad you are happy.

Your rating: None

buh bye KXL

It's lame that KXL cut Savage. I agree with the above posts about too much Lars; I like him, but waaay too much Lars isn't a good thing. I'm deleting my KXL radio button and replacing it with KPAM.

Another KXL lost-listener.

KXL are sick vampires

Have you ever noticed how sick and depraved the news is on KXL? They are media vampires soaking up the blood of innocents. It's pretty sick when all that's missing is the daily body count.

Steve Leader "Another dead 3 year old, and this time, it's not his fault..."

Who the hell writes their news? Every other news outfit in Portland Radio does not indulge in the daily death count with extra points for children. Sometimes death is part of a story, but not when it is the only fact of the story. I don't care how someone let their kids die in a hot car, or the neighbor raped and strangled them, etc. Tell me something besides a body count.

Savage's Return

Is Savage on KPAM now? Their website shows he's scheduled 3-6PM. There was a day that I enjoyed his show; but it grew old and predictable. Here comes a caller who either doesn't agree with Savage or has a point of view Savage hasn't yet thought of: "YOU ARE A JACKASS, IDIOT, GET OFF MY AIRWAVES!!"

I don't expect him to take pro-Obama or pro-Congress calls and not get worked up, but it is unfortunate that he refuses to give consideration to callers who try to educate him on the Left/Right Paradigm - Republican/Democrat Paradigm that has so stalled our nation. I've listened to him chew out a caller after that caller barely got out a sentence and a half. I've heard him, a week or 10 days later REPEAT the caller's opinion AS HIS OWN! The same guy who he previously blasted off the air!

I don't listen any longer. But I do have parents in their 70's who were happy today when I called and told them Savage is scheduled from 3-6PM. How far has Savage's numbers dropped over the last 2 years? What is the median age of his listeners?

Your rating: None

Yes, Savage debuted on KPAM

Yes, Savage debuted on KPAM today.

Your rating: None

Savage? Really?

"YOU ARE A JACKASS, IDIOT, GET OFF MY AIRWAVES!!"
Uh, that is a quote from Levin, not Savage.

Savage has railed against D vs R mentality for over a decade now. He is NOT a Republican party hack like Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Beck, Gibson, and the rest. He is also not owned by some big media conglomerate that reports to Rupert Murdoch or Clear Channel. He is, and always has been the only independent conservative on the air.

I am 40. My son is 15. In my house the median age is therefore 27.5.
