Old entry below (you can ignore this):

I'm considering a new feature on OMC and want to test something. If you have a high-speed connection, click this stream and, if it doesn't immediately open in a media player, let me know what browser and operating system you're using, and what media players you have installed, as well as any error messages you get.

For extra credit, open the URL (http://oregonmediacentral.com/temp/cbcj.m3u) directly in the media player of your choice and, if it doesn't open, let me know the version of the media player and what operating system you're using, as well as any error messages you get.

Thank you!

Testing stream

I'm using Windows XP and IE. The link opened Real Player, which is my default, but did not start a stream either immediately or after a minute.

Real Player

Could others try pasting the link into Real Player and letting me know if it works for them? Include your Real Player version and operating system, too. It works for me, but I'm using Real Player SP in Windows 7.

(Also, anon, check Help > About and let me know what version of Real Player you're using.)

MP3 streams

Unfortunately, I can only link to stations that provide streams in an MP3 format. KEX has a Flash stream and an AAC+ stream (which, despite Apple's use of AAC+ for iTunes, does not work in a streaming format from the browser), while KKAD only has a Windows Media stream. You can use iHeartRadio to play Clear Channel stations on a mobile phone. Clear Channel's Portland stations are KEX, K103, Oldies 106.7, Z100, The Brew, Jammin and KPOJ.

Works in everything

I have Vista, and it opened immediately in WinAmp (my default), and works in Windows Media Player, Real Player and iTunes, too.

Same here

I have XP and it works fine for me in Real Player 11.

Safari - iTunes

From the Mac side - all good.

Using WMP 11 on a Windows XP

Using WMP 11 on a Windows XP Professional machine, I'm sitting and waiting for it to buffer for an extended period.

However, this same thing is true for CBC Radio's new online streams. Eventually their programming starts, but it takes a long time. (note, I am NOT on dial up :) )

CBC Radio streams

Could you link to the streams you're talking about? Thanks!

Dysxelic

Sorry, I think I was a bit dyslixec for a minute and thought you said you did NOT have the same problem with CBC's new streams. Nevermind. I think it may be that the CBC streams at 192Kbps, whereas something like 64Kbps is more typical. Your player may just be taking some extra time to buffer three times as many bits, though that ideally shouldn't be happening.

Try this 16Kbps stream of KBOO. Does it start playing faster than this 128Kbps stream of the same programming on the same server?

RE: Stream issue

Thanks Mitch. KBOO's two streams kicked on at about the same rate here. It took about 8 "locomotive" seconds for audio to start playing.

I now fully comprehend why CBC's "high" streams sound so nice in comparison to most Internet radio. :-)

I use Windows XP with Google Chrome. When I clicked on the link it downloaded a shortcut to my desktop to click on that would then open the stream.

Alternative

For anyone who can't get the link in the original post to work, let me know if http://oregonmediacentral.com/temp/cbcj.pls is any better.

Media Player Classic

Told Windows to open it in "Media Player Classic" - basically a freeware app. that allows for Real and other audio that usually won't work on my machine to play.

m3u

You got it... it doesn't get more compatible than .m3u

All sound great

Real player generally takes a transcoder that most streaming servers will provide...

Mostly okey-dokey on Monday AM

The 107.9 player opened but no stream...sounds like something between them and Live365.

The 99.9 link opens at full volume and the audio is seriously overprocessed.

They all work, but

They all work, but loading those big Flash players, especially one after the other, really starts to slow down my browser.

Your rating: None

The links open the streaming

The links open the streaming pages provided by the stations, but I wouldn't use it for regular listening... Java is just wayyyy too inefficient.

Your rating: None

Who uses Java?

I believe they all use Flash. I can replace most of the Flash players with much smaller, lighter one, though. Clear Channel's player is a notable exception, though, in that there's no way around using it that I can find.

The problem with using MP3/AAC/M3U/PLS files is that every system is different and handles them different ways, so I would have to provide multiple options for each stream, making the experience more complicated. But perhaps I could include those links underneath the Flash player, so people who want to work on that can.

Your rating: None

Please do use the lighter

Please do use the lighter players, if you could. My browser slows down with some of them, too.

Your rating: None

Done

Every bulky Flash player that could be replaced with a simpler player has been, and the load times are faster.

Live TV streams added

I've added Portland's live TV streams to the list in the original post. Check back during a newscast to see them in action. I'm also looking for Portland-area online-only audio and video streams. Anything from a traffic cam to an online radio station will work. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment. Thanks!

Interesting, it works on the iPhone and on BlackBerrys. Could someone on another Android phone test it out?

Android phones

To listen to any of these on an Android based phone, just download a free app in the Google marketplace called Stream Furious (you can use the FREE version just fine). Once it's installed, come back and press any of the links that Mitch has provided on the page and it'll ask you what you want the phone to do with the downloaded file. Tell your phone you want to play the file in Stream Furious - bingo - it's added and will start playing. It'll retain it for the next time you need it too. Works great.

Thanks, Robert.

Does it work for AAC+ streams like this one, too?

Your rating: None

TV streaming doesn't work for

TV streaming doesn't work for me at all (Win XP box.) Of course that would be because I don't have Real Player (contains spyware). I've also removed Windows Media Player for the same reasons.

Any chance you can make the streams available via VLC Media player (open source, best on the market, available in a dozen different operating systems)?

Direct links

These should work:

KATU
KOIN
KGW
KPTV

Do you have any problems with the POP29 and CityNet 30 Flash players?

More is coming

...if this goes beyond just testing. There are far too many radio stations in Oregon (over 1000 if you include translators) to use them all in a test.

Radio Streaming

It worked on my BlackBerry curve, but navigating to it seems like a long way just to find music. I had to go to the OMC site, scroll down to the this article, look for the link to the radio stations and then play. It opened up my media player and worked but is there a shorter way to use these links to play music? Should I have bookmarked the page that has the links? Is it possible to have a BlackBerry shortcut icon, or do sites pay RIM to have one of those?

Your rating: None

You can bookmark it

It's a fairly straightforward address: http://oregonmediacentral.com/player

I believe you can save bookmarks to the home screen as well. This is still just a test, though, so I can't guarantee that that link will work forever.

Fire Scanner

Is there a possibility that you can post a stream of the Clackamas County 9-1-1 frequencies? That would be great.

More streaming player updates

I've changed a lot of the code for the streaming players. Some of that is just to clean things up on my end, but some of it should be visible. Every stream except KBPS, KFIS, KPDQ and KRYP should now use a simple, lightweight player. Every stream except those should also be centered horizontally and vertically. And each of the four TV news stations' players should show video that lines up perfectly with the top left and right corners, without extra black space. (Use KPTV to check this at any time. Ignore the black space on the right side of KATU's animation, which is part of the video itself.) Try it in different browsers, especially IE, and let me know if any of the above isn't true. Thanks!

KATU and KGW's stream is

KATU and KGW's stream is squished into 4:3 from widescreen.

Your rating: None

That's their doing

The player is sized to the video, which those stations have stretched for some reason. If it weren't, you'd see black bars that would preserve the aspect ratio.

Your rating: None

New source

I found a new source of video for KGW that is proportionate. I also scaled down the video for KATU and KPTV to half of their native sizes, which makes it clearer. The video quality wasn't great at the large native resolutions, anyway. You can always right-click on the players to select Zoom > Full Screen.

droid test

I didn't do a full test of the latest links, but the two knrk stations are working great from a Motorola Droid with streamfurious.

AAC+ streams on Droids?

Is StreamFurious able to handle AAC+ streams? You can test this KNRK link. Thanks!
