KUFO
By Mitch Nolan — Wednesday, March 10, 2010; 11:58 am
KUFO (101.1) night DJ Marconi is teaming up with Tiny, his former co-host on KNRK (94.7), for a live, daily podcast on KUFO.com.
The pair were last heard together on Portland's air in 2004, when they made national headlines for laughing over the audio of American Nick Berg in Iraq, leading to their firing.
Their new show will be online-only, every weekday at 2 pm.

These ratings for listeners aged 6 and up are for entertainment purposes only. They do not necessarily reflect the the ratings that transactional decisions are based on. If anyone can provide demographic ratings for radio or television in any Oregon market, please email oregonmedia gmail [dot] com and we'll publish what ratings services allow. Thank you!
That said, here are some of the movements in P6+:
- KXL (750) came within half a point of KEX (1190) as the news and Lars bumped out Savage.
- Z100 (KKRZ) is rising while Jammin (107.5 KXJM) and The Buzz (105.1 KRSK) are falling.
- KNRK (94.7) moved ahead of KUFO (101.1).
- The Wolf (99.5 KWJJ) leaped ahead of KUPL (98.7), which fell back to pre-holiday levels. How is KUPL's new morning show doing?
- K103 (103.3 KKCW), KGON (92.3), The Brew (105.9 KFBW), Charlie (97.1 KYCH), The Fish (104.1 KFIS) and KPAM (860) returned to pre-holiday levels, while Oldies (106.7 KLTH) made only a partial recovery.
- KINK (101.9) is treading water at a historically low rating.
History: Summer to December 2009, Fall 2008 to Summer 2009.

KUFO (101.1)'s "Kidd Chris" Foley criticized the radio business on-air Friday, which this morning led to a 15-minute conversation with Tara Dublin, local radio advocate and music director for KZME, a community radio station set to launch in July.
The two were unusually candid for an on-air exchange. Foley, who came to KUFO in October following a mass firing of talent there, called radio "a terrible industry," adding, "They're all snakes that run this business." He said major radio companies like Clear Channel and Entercom don't really care, that they're "just getting ready for the next guy to come in and go, 'Hey, we'll buy those from you.'"
Dublin revealed that, after she was fired from KNRK (94.7) in May, the station replaced her with "two hours of automated music, and then Gustav comes on at noon and is on until 7." Foley's on-air partner Porkchop was in disbelief: "Wow, someone goes on from noon till 7?" Foley suggested there might be some voice-tracking, but Dublin assured him that Gustav was in the building.
"What's the radio cycle, six months?" Dublin asked. "My friend Jaime Cooley, who got fired from 94.7, went down to Phoenix to do morning radio and she just got fired." Foley, who held that you're not in radio until you're canned, said, "I don't have to quit this job. This job will become available soon enough, the way our track record goes."
But the show wasn't all commiseration. When Dublin asked how much of KUFO's music was local — pointing out that DJs have "no control over the playlist" — Foley said, "Local radio stations have always tried that whole thing of playing all local music, and then they die." Porkchop added that, "When I listen to the radio, I don't know if I want to try to figure out who this band is or if I like it." Foley put it bluntly: "I want to hear what I know and that's it."
But Dublin insisted that, "Just because it's free, doesn't mean it has to be lame and mediocre and pandering to Middle America." Foley, who tried later in the conversation to introduce T&A talk, rebutted that, "When we came here, everybody was like ... you can't be doing that, we're a high-brow town, and then we picked up the phone, and it's all stoner dudes."
With the same tastes in TV shows and the same Starbucks on every corner, Foley said, "Portland's just like every other city."
The Kidd Chris Show airs weekdays on KUFO from 5 to 10 am. Dublin can be found on Twitter and on her website.

Chris Patyk has returned to Tucson after two years as program director at KUFO and KCMD in Portland, All Access reports. As of this week, he's now PD at three of Clear Channel's Tucson stations: news/talk KNST-AM, oldies KWFM-AM, and adult alternative KWMT-FM, where he'll also co-host the morning show.
Patyk was booted from his two stations at Alpha Broadcasting shortly before Alpha relaunched hard rocker KUFO with a new lineup in October. He's now working in the same building as KRQQ, the station he worked at in 1993-94. He's also worked at KZON and KEDJ in Phoenix.
"It's great to see the sun again after a couple of years in Portland!" he says.
(Thank you to Cheryl Kanekoa for sending this in.)

For the first time, Arbitron is publishing monthly ratings for Portland, now that the Portable People Meter is in use and recording what devices attached to panelists hear, rather than what panelists remember hearing. This data comes from people aged 6 and up, which is not demographic-specific data used to buy and sell advertising or make other important decisions.
K103 jumped to first place with huge numbers, which has not been unusual for office-friendly soft rock stations in other PPM markets. They dethroned OPB, which only fell to second place, despite 11 other stations having more listeners. (Fewer people who listen longer and more often can result it higher ratings.) Oldies station KLTH soared to third, but do older songs mean older listeners outside the prime sales demos?
Among the worst-performing stations is progressive talker KPOJ, which debuted as the #1 AM station in Portland and the #1 Air America affiliate in the country in 2004, but is now significantly underperforming Clear Channel's other Portland properties, attracting less than one percent of the market's listening audience, according to PPM data.
Due to space limitations, we're only comparing the last three months of PPM results to quarter-ago and year-ago diary numbers. A look at all four previous quarters would most notably show that Spanish-language El Rey's dramatic fall from third to 12th was caused by ratings no lower than those in the Winter and Spring books.
Arbitron's idea of a month differs from yours:
October: 9/17-10/14
November: 10/15-11/11
December: 11/12-12/9
Recent major changes in Portland radio:
8/20: K-Hits rebrands as Oldies 106.7
9/14: KCMD rebrands as Freedom 970
10/28: KUFO relaunches
11/20: K103 goes all-Christmas
12/1: Jammin cancels The Playhouse
The results of KUPL's new morning and afternoon shows won't be seen until the January and February reports.

Cort and Fatboy are moving from Error FM to PDX.FM, the duo announced on their online radio show today. They're also moving up from 2 pm to 10 am and adding listener interaction through phones and chat.
The two were fired along with most of the air staff from Portland rock station KUFO (101.1) in October. Since then, they've found success online, with their podcast reaching as high as #14 among comedy audio podcasts on iTunes, regularly surpassing offerings from Ricky Gervais, Dane Cook, and Z100 (KKRZ)'s Phoenix-based morning team, Johnjay and Rich.
PDX.FM's Robert Wagner tells OMC, "A certain local radio station may have 'got their balls back,'" referring to a promotional line from the relaunched KUFO, but "we're just happy to have their brains, talent, and wit. Besides, we weren't careless enough to lose our balls in the first place."
The Cort and Fatboy Show debuts on PDX.FM on January 4.

 Susan Reynolds
Susan Reynolds will become KINK's director of marketing and promotion on January 4, after holding the same position at KUFO since 1996, the station has announced.
"I have always loved KINK and wanted to work there for years," Reynolds tells OMC, "but the timing was never right and the opportunity had not presented itself until now. Though we are in the same group of stations, I've never had direct responsibility for KINK and am really excited to get hands on. It's a great station with a terrific team of people, most of whom I've known for a long time."
But will she still be known as Susan "Don't F With Me" Reynolds over at KINK? With a laugh, she says, "The nickname came from my very dear friend Rick Emerson and I think this might be an appropriate time to retire it."
The move to KINK wasn't prompted by Emerson and the rest of KUFO's morning and afternoon teams being fired from the station in October, however. "There's no question I was sad to see Rick and the others on the team leave KUFO," Reynolds says, "however we're still friends and the two things are unrelated. Like most things, this is about timing. This was a rare opening at a well respected station so I'm really glad that [KINK Program Director] Dennis Constantine has the confidence in me to lead the marketing and promotional charge...I know a lot of people expressed interest in the position."
Besides KUFO, Reynolds worked at WGN and WLS in Chicago; KSFO, KYA and KSOL in San Francisco; and KKCW ("K103") for five years in Portland.

KINK is moving out of the KGW building and KXL will no longer be at the bottom of a hill as the six radio stations of Alpha Broadcasting are moving into a single space: the Pacwest Center in Downtown Portland.
Scheduled for May 1, the move will unite Alpha's corporate offices with its six studios and a street-level performance lounge. The studios will be on the sixth floor, with corporate offices one floor up. The Pacwest Center is at 1211 SW 5th Avenue.
"Getting all our employees into one location is key to our plan to achieve maximum efficiency in our operation," says Alpha Chairman and CEO Larry Wilson. "While KINK has had a live performance lounge for nine years, the new expanded lounge will be the live venue for all recording artists, sports figures, business dignitaries and political figures who visit Alpha headquarters. We also plan to host special events in the lounge for our largest advertisers."
KCMD, KUFO and KUPL currently share space at 2040 SW 1st Avenue. KINK's location in the KGW building at 1501 SW Jefferson is a legacy of the two stations' ownership by King Broadcasting in Seattle. KXL and what is now KXTG ("The Game") have been at 0234 SW Bancroft since 1996, when the stations were owned by Alexander Broadcasting.

Cort and Fatboy stopped by Portland Sucks today and more or less hung out for the hour, talking about their return to streaming and podcasting on Monday, their Midnight Movie tomorrow, and a range of other topics, including Rick Emerson, the KUFO playlist, and mannequins that look like Fatboy. To understand the first part of the conversation, you may want to listen to the special episode of Portland Sucks the night of the KUFO firings, which begins with angry KUFO listeners' voicemails.
The two have more upcoming appearances, including on KOUG Radio, WSU Vancouver's college radio station, moments from now at 4 pm and The Brew (105.9 KFBW) tomorrow at 1 pm with Daniel Bozyk.
Their Midnight Movie is tomorrow at 11 pm, when they'll show "Raising Arizona" at the Bagdad Theater. Doors open at 10, tickets are $3, and the event is 21+. "It's like the old rock and roll day, that's why we're here — that's what we're all about," says Ditch, program director and midday host of the new KUFO (101.1). He spoke with KOIN's Tim Joyce in an interview that aired yesterday evening:
