The former human resources manager of a Southington gardening and landscaping company has been charged with funneling about $75,000 from this business’ credit card into his personal bank accounts.
After a year-long investigation, 36-year-old Charles Allen was arrested last week at his home in White Plains, New York, and charged with first-degree larceny, illegal use of a credit card and receiving goods or services obtained by illegally using a credit card, Lt. Keith Egan said Wednesday.
Winterberry Gardens leaders first alerted police in September 2019 that they had discovered “financial discrepancies” connected to the business credit card issued to Allen, who had worked at the company’s head of human resources, police said.
A review of financial statements from late 2017 to mid 2019 showed $78,150 in unauthorized charges and fraudulent purchases, including fake invoices for a workplace safety training course for $3,000, Egan said.
Another 11 charges in varying amounts routed $28,000 from the company American Express card to an account on Square, a financial for online sales, that was used to route the money to Allen’s personal account, police found.
“Two separate bank accounts with Allen’s name also clearly showed that Allen was making fraudulent credit card transactions with the company credit cards and depositing the money into his personal account,” Egan said.
A search warrant for his Square and personal bank accounts ultimately uncovered 28 deposits totalling almost $74,600 into Allen’s personal account — each deposit made one or two days after the company credit card had been charged, Egan said.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant this month and officers from the White Plains Police Department detained him outside his residence late Thursday night. He was held as a fugitive of justice until he was extradited to Southington on Tuesday, Egan said.
Allen was released on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Oct. 26 in Superior Court in New Britain.
