From the business world to community service, 2020 has been a year like no other in Central Minnesota and beyond.
Amid all those challenges, it’s time to nominate the young business leaders who impressed you the past 10 months —in their professions and in their communities.
For the 16th consecutive year, SC Times and LOCALiQ are proud to announce nominations are now open for the annual 5 Under 40 awards.

In keeping with tradition, this year’s awards will honor those who have demonstrated innovation, involvement and influence at their workplace and within their community.
Over the years, the 5 Under 40 awards have honored some well-known Central Minnesotans.
For example, the inaugural Class of 2005 included Shelly Bauerly Kopel and Rick Bauerly of Granite Equity Partners, along with Michael Gohman of W. Gohman Construction and Brian Schoenborn, now of Moss & Barnett.
Last year’s honorees included Ryan Cross of BCI Construction, Bethie Gondeck of Grey Face Rescue & Retirement, Michelle Henderson of BadCat Digital, Sarah McGuire of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, and Bethany Schubert of Trobec’s Bus Service.
Who will join these distinguished winners this year? Your nomination could help decide.
The criteria for nominees are:
- Younger than 40 as of Dec. 31.
- In a leadership position at a for-profit business, or a nonprofit or not-for-profit enterprise that operates like a business. Government employees (including those working for city, county, public school and state offices) cannot be considered unless they also have responsibility for a private sector business or nonprofit.
- Doing the majority of his or her work within a 30-mile radius of St. Cloud.
After nominations close at midnight Nov. 1, qualified nominees will be contacted and asked to answer those same questions presented in the nomination form.
In November, the 5 Under 40 winners for 2019, along with two Times editors, will review those applications. Winners will be announced online and in print in mid-January, and the awards celebration is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 26.
