Rental assistance, stimulus proposal, American Dream

With Oct. 1 fast approaching, rent payments are due. Yet thousands can’t afford to pay this month, let alone for months before now. In Camden County on Tuesday, officials announced a new $4 million rental assistance program for county residents. The program uses federal CARES Act money to cover back rent, with payments made directly to landlords who have to waive any late fees or penalties.

It’s not going to happen right away, but New Jersey residents will get an opportunity to save money on their utility bills. Across the state, utilities have been submitting plans for new energy efficiency programs which could result in significant savings for customers.

Once again we’re left to wonder if New Jersey residents will get more help from the federal government. House Democrats have introduced another stimulus bill in an attempt to restart stalled negotiations with the Trump administration. This bill would revive the $600 weekly supplemental benefit for unemployed workers, and provide another $1,200 stimulus check.

The American Dream mall is scheduled to reopen Thursday, but two major attractions will remain closed. Merlin Entertainment says its SEA LIFE Aquarium and its Legoland Discovery Center won’t open until spring, as it needs more time to put state-mandated safety measures in place.
